STEVE BAIRD
Springs Spur, 52 Fredas Ln, Tawonga
“Working on canvas with acrylics, oil pastels, collage and text, Steve weaves narratives and myths into remembered landscapes and imagined places, creating images of his world view.”
An Australian artist, born to a family that valued experiencing the world as adventurers, with journeys to the mountains, the coast, the deserts, any wild landscape, nurturing in Steve, a passion for the Australian landscape, and the cultural marks of mankind upon the land.
This led to a life of knocking about the bush, as a carpenter and builder, designer, horseman, tour operator, writer and artist, forever restless and looking for new horizons. Along the way developing a lifelong habit of recording observations and adventures in travel journals, raw, live documents of place, recording the lay of the land, the lines and marks of place, as drawings and color sketches in watercolor, gauche, pastels and inks.
Back in the studio studies for paintings are created mostly in pastel on paper where design and color can be explored and ideas tried out. Mostly working in acrylic paints on canvas, Steve builds up grounds of color and texture to lay down the land. The features of the landscape then populate this ground with paint, scoured line, drawn line, sometimes text and collage to recreate the place.
